Quantity Surveyors

This profession started in the early 19th century and which basically entailed the preparation of standardized schedules for the construction of a building, in which all of the construction materials labor related activities were quantified and against which some of the competing constructors could easily submit their priced tender.

Generally, Quantity Surveyors are required to employ a wide array of skills acquired through specialized training and invaluable experience. This profession demands dedication as the responsibility entailed is very great indeed thereby making it extremely important that no forms of laxity or unprofessionalism is present.

A quantity surveyor is a central figure for the management team, throughout the project from its start right up to the finish. He or She handles estimation and cost control, the whole tendering process and after contract award and the commercial interface.

He must be trained in the various ways on how to effectively cut costs but still manage to uphold high standards of quality throughout the construction period.

"Construction Cost Consultant" is a term generally used to emphasize the importance of cost control. Its purpose is ultimately to ensure that projects are designed and are constructed in such a manner that they shall by the value derived from the finished work, derive good value for money, cost certainty and programmed dates.

A Quantity Surveyor is very essential in all types of projects that can be found in a country. These may include industries, infrastructure, healthcare, education and even public buildings

A consultant Quantity Surveyor is mainly concerned with contracts and costs on the construction of particular projects. He may employ wide ranging activities to meet his goals, which may include cost planning, value management, feasibility studies, tendering among a host of many other core functions.

The traditional independence mostly associated with this role, attaches a reputation of fairness to it. This combined with invaluable expertise in drafting and interpretation of contract documents, enables him settle issues, avoid disputes and the smooth running of the whole project.
Construction costs are made through accurate measurement of the work require.

Application of expert knowledge of costs and prices of work, labor materials required ensure that good value for money that has been spent.

A Contractor Quantity Surveyor manages the operations that have been outlined by the owners Quantity Surveyor. His duties include measuring and pricing of construction work, but dealing more specifically with work performed by the contractor as opposed to the construction work described and measured in the construction contract between the owner and the contractor.

Their roles will extend further than the daily work schedule as they will be required to sub-contract, forecast costs and values for the projects. This increase in the ability of the surveying profession, has led to an increase in the demand for qualified personnel.

Some contractors may generally try to rely on a general accountant to help him deal wit construction costs, but this is not advisable as an accountant does not have the technical knowledge that is such an important pre-requisite.
