Alberta Leads with Highest Average Wages in Canada

Statistics Canada has released numbers for the month of September 2013 placing the province of Alberta to have the highest average "non farm payroll employees" paid wages than all other Canadian provinces.

Stats Canada reported that monthly incomes in the province rose to $1,114.95 which is an increase of 0.4% from August and a 2.6% jump up from a year ago.

The average country wide monthly wages rose to $918.15, which represents a monthly increase of 0.3% and is up 1.9% the previous year, September 2012.

Statistics Canada stated that the Province of Alberta's year over year wage increases were prevalent including several industry sectors, with the construction industry and wholesale trade leading the pack.

Todd Hirsch, chief economist with ATB Financial, pointed out that Statistics Canada information displays Alberta as having a 33.1 hour work week including overtime. In the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador employees work on average 31.6 hour work week, placing Alberta and Newfoundland as the two longest work hour weeks over all other Canadian Provinces.

Hirsch adds that the longer work weeks prevalent in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador are a reflection of a strong economy with fewer part time workers and plenty of over-time hours. This can be due in large fact that most of Alberta's inter-provincial migrants are purposely moving to the province to work. Working through a long work hour week is often viewed as a badge of honor.

The reported shortest hour work week in Canada goes to the province of British Columbia with an average of 28.8 hours and 1 hour of overtime. The Canadian average work week is 36.6 hours per week. The industries in Canada with the least amount of weekly hours worked are Utilities and Agriculture.
