The Calgary Public Library has made a New Years resolution to reinvent its identity and offer more benefits to patrons.

Some of the key changes the Library will offer include a new look, more selection and no membership fees.

Last Friday, (January 2nd, 2015), Calgary Public Library revealed it's new identity. With over 240,000 square feet of usable space, the "New Central Library" will offer over 600,000 books in its collection, and a space designed specifically for technology and specialty programs.

The new library will offer a greater number of free movies, e-books, music apps and will no longer have room rental fees.

This initiative is a push to double the Library's current membership base to 800,000 by the end of 2015.

Calgarians can now register for their free membership on the Calgary Public Library official website or on their smart phone and mobile devices.

The Chief Executive Officer of Calgary Public Library, Bill Ptacek stated that the comprehensive changes in system and services is an endeavor to make the library the best of its kind in the world.

"Today's Calgary Public Library is our city's learning hub and an engine for economic vitality and workforce development," Ptacek said. "But more than that, great libraries like ours help build an engaged citizenry; engaged citizens create incredible, caring, world class cities."

Renovations will include common changes such as new shelving and streamlined collections to free up space and enhance the browsing, reading and meeting experience.

Children's learning and literary centres will also be added.

The new visual identity for the Library is based on Annie Davidson and founding members of the Calgary's Women's Literary Club who had influenced the city of Calgary to build its first public library more than a century ago.

Calgary has a total of 18 public libraries throughout the city.

The New Calgary Central Library construction and renovations are now underway in Calgary's East Village. The grand opening is scheduled for 2018.
