The Manitoba Government announced recently that the bridge at Island Park in Portage la Prairie will be included in a $1.14 million (CAD) funding of 13 municipal bridge improvements across the province.

With the governments municipal bridge program $91,643 (CAD) will go towards the funding of the Island Park Bridge. The costs breakdowns are to include $66,643 (CAD) for preliminary design and engineering and $25,000 (CAD) dedicated for the construction phase.

Portage Mayor Irvine Ferris states that the construction of the bridge may not start until 2016-2017, as there are quite a few consultations that need to first take place including community engagement. Some of the considerations that need to be discussed by city hall are whether the new bridge build will be steel, wood or a combination of the two, if the causeway will remain intact and the process of water flow.

The municipal bridge program was developed as a partnership between the province Manitoba and the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM). Provincial funding will come from the Building Manitoba Fund.

Of the thirteen shared projects, 6 will involve preliminary design and engineering work and 7 will involve bridge construction.

To present date, the Municipal Bridge Program has committed $3.4 million in funding for municipal bridge renewal and rehabilitation projects.
