MacKenzie Sawmill in Surrey, BC in a Blaze of Fire

At 1 a.m. Saturday morning (Nov. 1), a 3 alarm fire bursted out at the Mackenzie Sawmill in Surrey, BC, causing massive damage to the plant and it's buildings.

It is now recorded as the 3rd fire in the past 3 years at the sawmill.

Karen Fry, Deputy Fire Chief of Surrey stated that fire crews were initially dispatched to a report of "wires down", but upon arrival the fire crew was met with a fully involved fire at the mill and it was fairly hard to get at as the mill's layout complicated access points and the firefighters efforts

Fire crews have spent the next day dealing with the after math, mopping up the area and squelch hot spots. Deputy Fry says it is too early to determine if there was maliciousness involved in the mill's fire and an investigation into its cause is now underway.

Fry added that the sawmill was not in production, it was presently undergoing renovations, and no persons were injured or hurt.

This being the third fire in three years at the mill; in 2011 a large area of the mill was destroyed by a 3 alarm fire, and in November of 2010, the mill was temporarily closed down due to a smaller fire which damaged equipment which seized operations.
