The Province of British Columbia (Ministry of Transportation) will invest $45 million (CAD) spanned over the next 5 years to repair British Columbia's worst stretch of highway, the Westside Road in the Okanagan, making it safer for both local families and tourists.

The infamous Westside Road was voted 2nd worst in British Columbia in 2014 and ranked the number one spot in 2013.

According to BCAA (British Columbia Automotive Association), 84% of voters cited the crumbling of pavement and pot-holes as the main problems with the road.

The road building project involves 2 construction phases with a estimated cost of $10 million (CAD).

Kelowna, BC construction firm Emil Anderson Construction Inc. was awarded the "Phase One" contract for repairs and improvements from Blue Grouse to Waterfront Farm. This section of Westside Road, spanning 800 metres, is to be expanded to have 3.6 metre wide lanes with the additional of paved shoulders, roadside barriers and rock-fall protection measures in place. These improvements will raise the traffic speed limit up to 70 km per hour.

Phase Two of the Westside Road project warded to Armstrong BC firm Okanagan Aggregates Ltd., is located at the north end of Westside Road. This phase will see an approximated 8.7 km section resurfaced between Skookum Mine Road, 10 kilometres north west of Vernon, BC and the Highway 97 Junction.

Phase one of construction has begun and is due to be completed in fall 2015. Phase two construction is slated for completion as early as the end of the month.

The Province of British Columbia has invested more than $600 million (CAD) since 2001 to upgrade roads, highways, transit and bridges in the Okanagan Valley Corridor, and the Westside Road is a long overdo project that has local residents gasping in relief.
