The Ontario Ministry of Labour has released its 2016-2017 workplace safety blitz schedule.

Between May 2, 2016 and March 31, 2017, the schedule includes the Ministry of Labour standards officers to visit various workplaces across the province such as construction sites, food services, commercial retail stores and mines to investigate any potential violations of occupational health and safety laws and to ensure Ontario's employments standards are being met.

Business sectors with vulnerable workers and a history of previous violations will be targeted more vigorously.

The provinces media statement indicates that employment standards officers will be checking for violations that could possibly affect the wages, overtime and number of hours worked for temporary foreign workers and employees of repeat violators, in an effort to ensure workers are receiving what they are owed by the business owners.

Provincial inspection for adherence to temporary foreign workers regulations will be taking place between May 2, 2016 to June 30, 2016.

For prevention of violations in the industrial, construction, and mining business sectors, these inspections will take place between May 16, 2016 and July 15, 2016.

The materials hoisting and mobile cranes business sector will see inspections done between August 1, 2016 and September 30, 2016.

Inspections for the prevention of electrical hazards in the construction industry will be held between November 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016.

In the Eastern region of Ontario, the wood frame structures industry will see inspection between April 1, 2016 and September 30, 2016

Vehicles, machines, equipment and tools in the Northern region construction sector of the province will be inspected between June 1, 2016 to July 31, 2016.

In the Central West region of the province, the finishing trades sector of construction will be inspected between July 1 to 31, 2016

The Central East region of the province, inspections of wash up facilities and toilets in the construction industry between January 1, 2017 and February 28, 2017

Ministry of Labour occupational health and safety inspectors have conducted more than 620,000 field visits and 79 provincial inspection blitzes, since 2008. In this period inspectors have issued more than $1 million (CAD) compliance orders for safety issues across all sectors in Ontario.
