Vancouver, BC was awarded and hosted the 2010 Olympics due in part to the development of the $2 billion Canada Line rapid transit skytrain system, and Richmond, BC has been and is still enjoying the benefits in its economical growth.

Since the opening of the Canada Line there is a ridership of over 120,000 passengers on a daily basis. Providing a safe and quick way to get to and from work is not the only benefit Richmond residents are enjoying. construction is booming!

5 out of new 6 town centers presently under construction are in and around the Canada Line. There are millions of square feet of new office and retail space, 3600 new dwellings are being built along the Richmond city route along with over 1500 new hotel units. Close by, the Olympic Oval Village along with Lansdowne are seeing the construction of 5,500 new highrise condo units.

The City of Richmond, BC is expecting 80,000 new residents to settle in the area within the next 20 years, making an impact on office space, retail, and housing.

Richmond City Mayor Malcolm Brodie states the development of the Canada Line rapid transit system has been long in the making, stating, "Since they took away the trams (rail) system to Richmond back in 1958, we've been working to get it back ever since." Mayor Brodie added, "We always envisioned we'd take the growth in the city center and the residents would be oriented to the use of rapid transit and public transportation."
