Shangri-La Concrete Pour in Toronto, Canada

Construction of the Shangri-La Toronto hotel and condominium complex continues apace, with workers pouring concrete recently for the 66 story project at University Avenue and Adelaide Street. The multi-use tower is in an area to the west of the Financial District - an area that's seen much growth in the past few years.

Included in the Shangri-La tower are to be a fitness centre, theatre, retail space, 573 total hotel and apartment units, and an eight-level underground parking garage. It is scheduled for completion in early 2012.

Designed by Vancouver architect James Cheng, the complex is being built by Westbank Projects Corp. The 201 metre Living Shangri-La - the tallest building in Vancouver, was also built by Westbank Projects Corp. Toronto's Shangri-La will be 214 metres tall and will rank in the ten tallest buildings in Toronto once it is completed.

The hotel part of the complex is to be run by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. It will have 220 guest rooms. The condominium complex will reside on the upper floors and will contain 353 units.

Site excavation for the Shangri-La began in 2008, and groundbreaking for the parking garage began in 2009. The neighbourhood in which this structure is being built used to be home to the historic Bishop's Block, which was built in 1830 by John Bishop, builder of Georgian row houses on the site.

Most of those buildings were torn down and paved over as parking space. However, the Bishop's Block, the one surviving structure and one of Toronto's first hotels and a long-time pub, was not torn down. Instead it was disassembled when construction of the Shangri-La began, but developers have promised to rebuild it as part of the project.

During the time the Bishop's Block was being disassembled, the site underwent archeological exploration, an undertaking that unearthed many artifacts from Toronto's earliest history. The Shangri-La will showcase the archaeological treasures in the foyer of the condominium complex when its tenants move in.

The area is part of a bustling district where another proud Toronto Landmark, the King Edward Hotel, is changing ownership. Israeli-Canadian businessman Gil Blutrich recently signed a deal to buy the hotel from Starman Hotels for $52 million. Blutrich will have his work cut out for him, as Trump International, the Ritz, and now the Shangri-La are added to the upscale mix.
