Last Wednesday construction began on the Brookfield Place Calgary eastern tower, which will mark the building as the tallest in all of western Canada upon completion.

The initial phase of construction will begin on the old Herald building in Calgary's downtown core area, which will comprise of 1.4 million square footage of office space, in the eastern tower, which equals 247 metres in height or 56 storeys in total.

Tallying in at $1.3 billion in construction, the new Brookfield Place Calgary will consume a city block area located between 6th and 7th Avenues S.W. and 1st and 2nd Streets S.W. Toted as the largest private sector construction project in Calgary history, the tower is scheduled to be completed by the second half of 2017.

A pavilion area next to the eastern tower will be named "The James K. Gray Gallery" after a member of Western Canada's natural gas and exploration business.

Additional plans for the site include for a 60 foot high - 1 million square foot glass tower pavilion with retail shops, restaurants, pubs and amenities at the ground level. There will also be underground parking to accommodate eleven hundred cars. A 1/2 acre plaza area will feature cafes, restaurants, cultural activities, as well as, public art displays which will be provided by Brookfields Arts and Events program department.

Good news for the cities economy, the Brookfield Place Calgary project is projected to create approximately thirteen hundred new construction related jobs with seven and a half million working hours the Calgary area.

Calgary's downtown has been noted as being one of the most successful downtown cores in the entire world. Both Brookfields and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi are confident the tradition will be carried on with the Brookfield Place Calgary by changing the Calgary skyline forever.
